Although my current teaching music is beautiful, calming, thoughful, serene etc, when doing Pilates on my own (at 5am in my shed!), I listen to Nickleback, Led Zepplin, Rush, Linkin Park. I have earphones and it’s loud. REALLY loud. My wife and daughter tell me I can’t sing and close the windows. Their loss.
Anyhoo – I tried an experiment in one of my classes at Aquatic SA recently. The early morning gig, a 6am class, they were barely awake and probablly looking forward to my usual offering of forlorn whales mating in an echoing elevator. Nup. For the first time in ages, I doned a microphone headset to be heard above the din and hit them with six tracks of AC/DC (starting with ‘Thunderstruck’, of course). They loved it. Sure, we were all most likely using more global than deep muscles. So? At least it wasn’t ab-crunches and….. it sure was FUN!
But why stop there? I am planning a few Pilates classes at all my venues – with a selection of music that is way ‘different’ from the norm – I’m seeking your help….. I’ve got a few ideas of my own but how about you ‘chip in’ via the <comments section> below.
I’ll play a brief into – say 5 seconds of each track – with a 15 second gap, during which you can all guess the move about to follow and/or the significance of the track.
Anyhoo - to give you a feel for the way I’m heading with this:
- Every Breath You Take – The Police
(ie every breath you take, every step you make, I’ll be watching you…..)
- We Will Rock You - Queen
- Weak In The Presence Of Beauty - Alison Moyet
(even when you're all sweaty and yucky.....)
- We're Gunna Make You A Star - David Essex
- Push It, Push It Real Good - Salt 'n' Pepper
- Simon Says Put Your Hands In The Air - Unknown
- Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better - Unknown
(Side Lift, into Star, into Twister Moves)
- Take My Breath Away - Top Gun Theme
(Swan III Move)
(other close contenders included the music from 'The Nutcracker' and 'Never Mind The Bollocks' - Sex Pistols)
- Mercy - Duffy
- You Spin Me Round - Dead or Alive
- Tell Me Lies - Fleetwood Mac
(ie "simply float one leg off the ball, it's easy...")
- Pretty Vaccant - Sex Pistols
(relaxation ? bit at the end - ie 'let your minds wander'...)
