“Be Positive, It WILL Fail…..”
I wonder if Pamelah will edit the subject line?….. Perhaps I should explain…. When she asked me to write something for her blog, Pamelah requested I finish will ‘something that will give people hope for their future’ and, being my father’s son, I immediately remembered one of his immortal phrases. He died way too many years ago but I can still hear him saying ‘Be Positive, It WILL Fail’. Priceless. It’s up there along with another one of his (and mine) favourites ‘don’t TALK to your mother like that boy…. SHOUT…!’…..
‘Hope for the future’… Hmm, the problem is though, I’m a guy and my work (IT security) requires me to constantly think of worst case scenario, expect and plan for disaster. I just don’t DO that ‘karmic, tree hugging, crystal loving, life force energy flow, woosa stuff’……
…. Or do I?…..
My long suffering wife of 26 years and counting, Sarah, embraces all things holistic (Pam – you and she would discuss chakras, reiki, tibetan singing bowls into the small hours).
I have been working in IT for way too many decades. Back in the ninety’s, I had a Netware 3.12 File Server (this will date me a ‘dinosaur’ to those in the ‘IT know’) that was continually abending (IT speak for crashing). When all else had failed, I humoured Sarah by putting one of her crystals atop the chassis and the bloody thing was stable thereafter…… It got me wondering, the seeds had been sown.
In about 2007, Sarah who initially introduced me to Pilates – I joined her to keep her company with the obvious male reservations about it being way beneath my ‘bloke dignity’.
I have never looked back and now teach Pilates.
In fact, it was one of Sarah’s ‘voodoos’ (as I call them when trying to get a reaction from her) that actually helped me finally be able to perform the elusive Pilates Roll Up! Yup, her Kinesiology helped me make the electrical/brain connections to fire the appropriate muscles and overcome my ‘six pack dominance’.
I guess the point I’m trying to make is that I am probably an extremely good ambassador for Pilates – especially for guys. Given my left brained IT nature, sick Brit sense of humour and Aussie cynisism, if Pilates really WAS all ‘woosa’, I’d not have stuck at it.
The positive ‘spin’ for this blog then being this:
Pilates WORKS! It is not trickery. Ladies, tell your men folk to get out of the ‘man cave’ and come with you to a session or too with Pam!
The effect it has had me on has been phenominal – both in terms of general toning, eliminated back pain (due to middle distance concrete running) and balance.
When we took these photos for my website, Sarah and I did wonder whether they were a little inappropriate – eg ‘rent boy for hire’. However, I reasoned that if Joseph Pilates himself could face the camera in his Y-Fronts then there was no reason I shouldn’t do likewise in my Speedos. These photos were taken in 2011 / aged 47. For the record, I do NOT to heavy weights.
